NCa just purchased a new company –  Networks. since I am the internal IT I went down to portland to network-up the offices and install a AD/Exchange box.

i went Tuesday night

So everything was going peechy (surprising well for what it entailed) and then BAM no email traversing from site to site via Exchange2000/SMTP well not bam but it was a huge problem.

i got home to Seattle just to drive back Thursday morning…

So I broke down and after googeling everything about SMTP failed on site addition and extra exchange server SMTP failed. I gave up and called Microsoft. Thats a 245$ phone call for those of you that are wondering.

So as time ticks apu is looking at my server. Then he says ah-ha (he really said that) and then asked do you use a PIX i was like yes i do. Then he said here

So i was like booooo-yea problem solved. now i just need to explain to my boss why i spent 245 on a firewall problem when we have a dozen CISSP in house. great!

Apu was looking around for more bugs and fixed up some issues with Site Connectors then he said something that surprised me. He told me that in this particular case Microsoft was not to blame. and because i had set up the exchange environment the way it should be that he cant charge me since it was 3rd party. I was like OH YEA BABY (seriously)

so then i went home.

yes i am a nerd, but i am very good at it.

So your company just dumped a new HP Integrity 64–Bit Server rx7620 in your lap and said get this working yesterday? well thats not as easy as I thought. First off it needs power. According to the white page 12a a line cord at 4(12) we are actually eating power! So read the Prep Guide its handy then when you gotta put the 250lb server in a rack this is Super handy install Guide. Note that the whole line of servers has the same documentation for its individual model. I found it by selecting my server from HP site then clicking on the self-help resources and the manuals link

64 Bit Madness So here are some pointers to setting up a HP Itanium with the EFI / SCI after you read the setup guide you will have a uhh what now question like I did. Thanks HP for that. so here is some tricks to keep you from my delays.

  • first have a laptop or dummy server handy to run a COM cable to its prolly not possible to have a remote COM session so just best to have a laptop or something handy. Then you can set the IP for the telnet to the MP after thats done. or leave the dummy server to do your dirty work.
  • TTY with VT-UTF8 emulation
  •  login of (Admin/Admin or Oper/Oper first time default) to get back to the MP for example get to the EFI and press CTL+B <– remember that
  • edit your cells/partitions from the MP -make sure your COM port is pluged into the master or MP (lit up with a LED)
  • once you get in you will see Server2003 Boot, then you want to access the SCI interface
  • run the command ‘ch’ to list your channels then run the command ‘ch -si #’ to connect to the Unattended Setup for Windows or ‘ch -?’
  • finish windows setup -reboot
  • go back into the SCI and login then type ‘CMD’ this maps a command prompt to a channel
  • follow the step to connect to a channel and connect to the server command line
  • then set your IP if needed or find out what dhcp did with Netsh
  • connect via RDP
  • allow the HP scripts to run
  • rename/domain/whatever your new $100k server!

Consider this HP makes a Video/USB card that will allow a local console so that you can use a keyboard and mouse and monitor just like every other non Linux hardware out there. (damn command line nerds) its the part number A6869A or get a ILO card

More handy notes

  • if your dont see the boot DVD/CD go into the EFI config and edit the boot menu to allow booting DVD (add the scsi device)
  • server is preloaded with 2003 to reinstall download the newest SmartSetup then boot it for OS install
  • the HP docs are good to get you thru OS install
  • remember its x64 so things like your DOS boot disk and ghost wont work but RIS03 will!

* netsh command is as follows for a example

netsh interface ip set address name="Local Area Connection" static 192.168.0.100 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1 1

How to use the nparcommands to Edit the Partitions

  • download the tools for 32 or 64 bit
  • if your on a external host remember to add the -u -p -i (username password Ip address) options to your command line
  • if your local you jsut run the commands
  • figure out what your up to with the ‘parstatus’ just run that and print to screen or a file for your managment
  • delete the partition you dont want ‘parremove -p 2’
  • modify the partition you do want to add the cell you jsut deleted ‘parmodify -p 2 -a 0/5:base:y:ri’
  • power off the cells then power them on with the PE command
  • check your new config with parstatus see if you did good

i found out in a manner today that i feel was not the best way, that i will be on nights still. i am very upset about this. i sort of figured that it was going to happen since i dont trust work very much any more. i am just sad that the company lived up to my expectations of that. i am tired of being alone.

I found out this week that i get to work another (minimum) of 7 weeks on the night shift. That makes me angry. I am not dooign well with this shift any more, i dont sleep and i dont do anything that makes me feel like i am helping the company any more. but i found a page today that makes me glad i dont work at wall-mart. Here is a link for employees to bitch about wallmart, so then i thought ha and looked for other pages like that –  UPS Drivers Bitching this didn't lighten my spirits reading how people pee in the filters for cars before installing them. Glad i dont shop there. UPS is a older crowd that complains and the funny part is the “driver” area where drivers complain, but some people complain about Dale Jarrett the UPS NASCAR driver its so awesome.

brings up a funny story about matt, he worked for the brown and he called me one day and said hey kelly listen to this i heard a “whomp” then a “thud” then matt saying “i jsut threw a package to deliver it” haha oh thats funny. bad, but funny. pet detective anyone?

plans for going to California are still in the works. my first vacation in a year, we are going to visit scott and matt in California – going to drive there. should be fun, going to have the video camera and digi camera so i’m sure we will have something crazy that i can post up.

i have also started today watching my financial records for the first time, trying to get a handle on what i waste money on to start saving up for buying a house.

Bank

hrm this looks like i need to fix something

oh yea WOOT WOOT back on top at google

weekend over, that sucks. Today at work however is gonna be sticky-icky.

i might add that this is week two now of the no shave till days campaign, status = no longer ichy

Week21

whats all that crap in the background?

oh yea so a car, kelly whats the scoop?–  i spent all day today working out some things that needed repaired like water in the fog lights and a shitty painted fender. I have started some easy mods to the car, like hacking the crappy antenna as well as editing the way the fog lights work. I also went to magnolia Hi-Fi for estimates on all my new stereo installation. but to keep you all in suspense a little longer i will post another day on that. I will however set up a “my car” photo album so you can see whats up.

I will not be shaving, until i see the light of day again. Its been one week now, of the mach3 sitting on the tub floor thinking about its triple edge action. If any of you got the sickening good connection i made with the title of this blog bonus points to you.(whats with all the pictures on blogs kelly?)

so the man has me working nights longer then i anticipated, turns out that however things might seem to be working in a business sometimes they arnt. They were supposed to hire a guy to replace me (weird to say that) but they haven't yet. so here i sit for a while longer. OH, i have nothing but sad to feel at the moment.

Which brings me to another point (has anyone noticed the lack of 100% nerd lately in my blogin) the other point really is that people are now starting to graduate. Asking about jobs and such and if i can hook them up at Corbis. Here is the answer, i can do what i can, but can not promise more. If you want to know what you can do at Corbis go here if you see something your capable of working on, then email me i will take your resume and hand it in, thus you by pass monster.com. If you know me good and i know you then you can just talk to me about things.

rather quiet day, however more stuff broke then normal – so i actually worked. SMTP email died as well as some network stuff. I also accidently unplugged a server farm form the network and it was offline for 11 minuet. Lets hope that no one noticed. Oops. I removed a bunch of servers today that is always good work since its exercise to hall that heavy crap around. Ryan from the help desk came to visit today and pick up a little of what i do. Corbis just signed a deal with Marvel Comics. When you think about it that is sort of cool, we now have licensing rights to all of the images of Marvel. So think of all the cool movies you saw and are going to see. The images can be licence for use by us now. That is huge. I dont know who licence there stuff before (them?) but hopefully this will be a bad ass move for us. I just like that we now have a spider-man cardboard cutout at the front of our office now. People will think we are some comic company. Its also cool cuz we have lots of marvel swag around the office now. I hope that bill gates invites stan lee to visit the office some day.

so its 130 in the morning and because of all this rain we have had it flooded the generator room here at work – causing the fire suppression system to weird out and beep a lot. I just got done cleaning that up, there was a lot of water it was icky. When you think that people (including me) spit in that vent for the air intake then it all drips all over hrm… well i guess its natures way of antibiotics.

its Tuesday and Tuesday is tape day i don't like Tuesday it takes like 4 hours to deal with 120 tapes, its not very fun and if i don't pay super good attn to it it gets messed up then some restore down the line will be messed up because of me. so i never like this daunting task.

gotta have the First Post

This is the new code for KellyKeeton.com/blog I chose to use the DasBlog asp.net source. with a work space here its nice easy setup just edit xml for the major options. I chose this because i wanted a ASP solution that would run on IIS and have no database back end. This was compared to .text which I didn't like as much.
