$imdb(wedding crashers) was a funny ass movie. rated R for some token nudity it movie is funny as hell. i laughed through the whole thing. The story and crappy romantic comedy i didn't like. I did really like the on screen dynamics with owen wilson and $imdb(Rachel McAdams) she was the “good girl” in the movie which is different from her $imdb(mean girls) role. oh yea throw in the word Divx and Torrent for easy google hits.

So I just pulled down a copy of Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 1 and thought, Share this with my mostly non nerdy Blog Readers! Fun for you. Google Hits for me. Here ya go…

Install:

After loading my DVD into a ShuttleX system with a IntelRaid and booting I got a BSOD so I rebooted yeah! it works with some crappy video support. Then i put in my key, and found my USB floppy drive and put my intel disk into the drive. Still no go. Seems like the beta forgot that people dont install floppy disks anymore. But never fear microsoft finally did something amazing. They allow you to pull OEM drivers from CD/DVD/USB thats right! so i burnt out a CDROM with my 300k of drivers and hit next. Now this was cool, the Install allows you graphically edit your partitions, with options to expand come along way from TXTMODE in 2003. I named my PC and step one of install was done (two step process)

Here is where the funny business started. I went to “installing windows” That was as far as it went the box just sat there. 10 mins later

Reboot – Try three of install. enter that damn key again.

This time I tried something different. I put the OEM cdrom in the computer and loaded the intelraid. Then i hit format after i partitioned then i pulled out the OEMcdrom and put back in the VistaDVD before hitting next, this seems to have “fixed the glitch” microsoft if your reading i also would like to see a better representation that the “install” is installing. Or a time countdown. I like countdown that actually have no real bearing on linear time in the real world. Give me some lame ass “whats new” in this version or something. It appears to also utilise a RAM disk during install.

On a P4/2Ghz it took about 10 mins to install reboot then it did a bunch of stuff (install drivers and PnP) where a annoying progress bad just went from 0–100% over and over again. My video support was now normal so thats a relief. There is a spinning sand timer icon for the mouse that is a close resemblance to win98plus. 10–15 later it reboots again.

FIRST BOOT:

Video is messed up again, there is a “supplemental drivers install” not working yet, but some day it might its cool they allow driver install first thing.

You can go else where for a review of the GUI enhancements. I personally dent care for them. Windows2000 has the best GUI that i ever would want. I didn't even bother with the new theme I put it right back to 2000classic. Then i promptly joined a domain so that my normal security and “pro” features would come to life. Yea…. lets just say this beta isn't Domain ready yet. so much for switching to my primary desktop as beta. I also dont like the “user switching” at all, this is XPHome. Back to GUI notes, i dont like the html look to every window but that can be shut off. and the task bar isnt auto showing user switching or logoff. They do have this cool view to show you how full a disk is in my computer. Thats nice. It took me about 10 mins to set up all the graphical settings to get it back to a 2000 look that “admins” like.

Other thoughts.

I noticed they have iSCSI support that is cool, there is a bunch of cool progression enhancements that make the os cool. Like the ability to edit the path in explorer on the fly. I can get it to blue screen every time from hibernation. anything else new i will post.

So I booted up a computer that i have had on my desk for the last 2 years. This was the first time and after applying about 34 hot patches i searched around on the hard disk. While finding a ton of crazy junk, i also found a lot of old pictures. here is what i have sorted and got on line so far. Wonder how much more i will find. This is a lot of Kids from Redmond High but also some old Corbis Alumni as well as a Sad day for my old blazer. And a TP job we are only waiting to get heather with!

So as i sit here on my ibook, i realize that i am loving it more and more for casual web-browsing and the no minded day to day work that is the internet. but there are a few things that are tedious on this mac like the lack of a right mouse button. guess i need to wait until the new i386 imac is out. Anyway a few tasks that i had to take care of were blogging and RSS feeds. Each of which after about 3 hours of playing with widgets and goofing around with software did i come up with the following. RSS Feed

NetNewsWire Lite - this application properly aggregates all RSS feeds in a nice OSX aqua format and allows the fast download when i pick up a wifi link for 2 mins in my car. its also free. There is a pay version but i dont want to pay for mac software. that makes me sick. the link for the free software is at the end of the page. This program gets the Kelly OSX approval.

Blogger API

Since DasBlog is MoveableType compliant i started my search for MT widgets. All of them suck XML isn't that powerful yet. I found an application called ecto This application appears to be as powerful as my windows counterpart BlogJet. In fact i would go so far as to say this application kicks the pants off of BlogJet; if it wasn't for the goofy osx user interface here and there I would be in love. In fact i did go to the work of trying to find a crack for it for OSX (couldn't find one) but I just contacted them and if its useable on i386 and PPC then i will gladly shell out the $20 for this product.

Other notable software while i am at it

Cocktail - Mac OS Cleaner (equivalent of TweekUI) This application has proved most useful for running of cron jobs and such that keep BSD subsystem happy.
Macjanitor - free version of Cocktail for the clean up jobs
AirTraffic Widget - WiFi Display Program
google toolbar for firefox - duhNow i sit and wait for the new iBook intel version!

So i updated to the new cool version thinking finally my Cisco VPN will stop crashing. Thanks to apple it gave me new problems. I was looking into the problem of "DNS resolve issues OSX" and found a TON of people with the same issues as me. Now i dont know why or who or when it failed. After a lot of reading and testing, found a few things. One it wasnt my network. Two there is no way i am going to use the "fix" of hardcoding DNS servers or setting other "Locations" for my network settings A huge story about the problems with OSX and DNS and crappy tech support. Out of this site or something else i found a new idea stupid mac likes to be hip and they implement IPv6 well the hell with that. Untill they fix there shit away it will go. I turned it off on the control panel and edited the /etc/hostconfig find the section for IPv6 and write it to NO reboot and your problem is solved. Damn AAAA records messing up my browsing!

Went out to see $imdb(Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) this weekend. It was everything i hoped it would be. Lots of people say its Depp at his creepy ness, yes but i didn't think it was over the top and resembling Michael Jackson like reviewers say. Actually I thought it was perfect remember this is a remake of the book not the original movie. This movie was worth the 9 dollars hands down. My only complaint is that the oompa songs could have been more of a sing along. Since well, why have them if they arnt?

This past weekend was the annual RHS/Echo Community Foundation Dunk Hoops Tournament. Basically everyone gets together for a organised game of ball. I DJ’d This little event. It was about 8 hour long and i was able to think of music to play for 8 hours (yikes).

After a very long day and we actually got some sun. Headed out to Valhalla in Kirkland for a bar sponsored ECF event. A good Saturday event.

The $imdb(Fantastic Four), yes i got to actually go watch a movie. Even if the movie price is a rip off at $9 this movie was ok. I put it on the same level as $imdb(Hulk) only it was funny. the Johnny Storm character was awesome i don't know if i was tired or it was actually good script but it made me laugh. as for the movie it was ho hum on the wow factor. Jessica Alba looking hot. Other then that it was a Marvel Movie for the collection. This was no X-Men film but it was no Hulk either. about a spider man 2 rating. with out the cool special effects.
